Audiology Licensure by State: A Quick Reference for Job Seekers

AuD license type, HIS requirements, and portability notes for all 50 states plus DC — the practical reference job seekers and remote-first audiologists actually use.

By AudGrade Editorial Team · May 12, 2026

Audiology is not part of an interstate compact. Every state issues its own license, sets its own fees, and runs its own renewal cycle. For job seekers — especially candidates considering tele-audiology, manufacturer field roles, or a relocation — keeping the per-state picture in your head is genuinely hard.

This is a practical reference. For each state we list the AuD license type (independent practice vs limited / supervised), whether HIS licensure exists separately, portability and reciprocity notes, and where to start the application. Always confirm with the state board before you commit — fees and rules change, and this page is updated periodically but is not the source of truth.

How to read the columns

  • AuD license: "Independent" means an AuD can practice without supervision in the full clinical scope; "Limited" or "Supervised" means there are state-specific restrictions on scope of practice (often around dispensing, ABR, or vestibular).
  • HIS license: "Required" means a separate HIS / Hearing Aid Dispenser license exists and is required to dispense hearing aids if you are not an AuD; "Required (AuD also)" means even AuDs must hold an HIS-equivalent or dispensing endorsement to sell hearing aids.
  • Portability: Notes on whether the state accepts another state's license, requires a full new application, and any reciprocity agreements.

Practical tips for multi-state candidates

  1. Apply in parallel, not sequentially. If you are targeting tele-audiology or a multi-state field role, send three to five applications at once. Most states do not penalize parallel applications, and the calendar is the bottleneck.
  2. Keep verified transcripts and a clean primary-source verification file. Most states want a primary-source verification from each state you have previously been licensed in. Order those once, save them, and you save weeks on every subsequent application.
  3. ASHA CCC-A and ABA certification both ease applications. Several states will waive the exam or transcript review if you hold a current CCC-A or ABA. Keep them current even if your employer does not require them.
  4. Budget time, not just money. Per-state fees rarely exceed $300. Per-state processing time can be six to sixteen weeks. The total wait is the real cost.
  5. Confirm the latest before you commit. State boards revise rules. Treat this page as a starting map, not a binding answer.
